Trailers are pretty long-lasting pieces of equipment. As a result, it's not uncommon to trade old models in when you’re no longer using them, or they no longer fit your needs. Unfortunately, there isn’t a ton of information out there on how to prepare for a trailer trade-in, so we’ve written up the helpful tips below.

Maintenance

Before you bring your used trailer into the dealership, you’ll first want to take some time to get your equipment back to its former glory. To start, we recommend grabbing your hose and scrub brush and giving your trailer a good wash. This is also the perfect time to treat any rust or oxidation that’s appeared on your equipment and inspect its more delicate parts and components for damages. While most trailer maintenance is fairly simple, and can often be done from the comfort of your garage, more serious repairs may need to be seen by a professional.

Repairs

Before you haul your equipment into the nearest mechanic’s shop, take some time to do a bit of research on the repair. If the issue looks like it will cost at least 300 dollars to fix, and your trailer is only worth 400 dollars, it’s better to try and trade-in your model as is. Many dealerships will still allow you to trade-in your trailer for a reasonable price, and may even decide to fix the issue themselves once you’ve turned over the title.

Prep Your Paperwork

While your trailer’s title and registration may be the only documents required to trade-in your equipment, we strongly advise gathering as much information as possible about your model’s maintenance and care over the years. Receipts and records proving your trailer has been well cared for can do a lot to increase its value and improve the likelihood of a successful sale.
