Should You Buy a Utility or Enclosed Trailer?
While utility and enclosed trailers are both popular common-use models, these two trailers couldn’t be more different. While they both perform the same basic function—to haul freight—each model carries very different cargo. To figure out which trailer is the best choice for you and your freight, we advise reading our article below on the pros, cons, and unique features of both utility and enclosed trailers.
The Pros and Cons of Enclosed Trailers
Enclosed trailers are a great choice for buyers looking to carry an enormous load of cargo, or sensitive freight that needs to be protected. Because this model’s bed is completely covered, there’s no risk of your items falling out into the road, or being damaged by flying debris or bad weather. Because they have high walls and ceilings, it’s also very easy to stack items up high in an enclosed trailer, making them perfect for fitting large loads of cargo.
However, enclosed trailers do have their downsides, specifically in terms of weight and size. Because they include four walls and a roof rather than a simple open bed, these trailers are prone to sway, can be difficult to tow, and will require a heavier towing vehicle most of the time. If you have extremely long or bulky cargo, you may also have trouble getting your freight to fit into the confines of your enclosed trailer’s bed, or through the opening at the back of the trailer.
The Pros and Cons of Utility Trailers
Unlike enclosed trailers, utility trailers have completely open beds, with some models including small bits of metal siding to allow users to quickly secure freight. Thanks to this trailer's open dimensions, this model is fit to carry almost anything you can think of—whether it’s heavy equipment, long construction materials, or even small vehicles. Utility trailers are also incredibly lightweight, making them easier to tow, and able to carry heavier loads of freight.
Unfortunately, utility trailers aren’t the best at transporting large loads of small to medium-sized objects, as they’re difficult to tie down and likely to fall out onto the road. Your cargo also won’t receive any kind of protection from the weather, flying debris, or sticky fingers if you need to make a stop.
