Trailers are often targeted by hopeful thieves. Sometimes, they aim to steal the trailer. Other times, they simply want the items stored inside. Either way, you will want to take steps to prevent trailer theft.

We've gathered up some key strategies below. If you want more advice or want to shop trailers for sale, reach out to Mountain West Trailers. Our dealership is located in Heber City, Utah, and we also serve those in Salt Lake City.

Change Your Trailer's Appearance

The more unique your trailer looks, the less likely a thief will try to steal it. After all, a more recognizable trailer will be easier for an owner to recover and harder for a thief to sell.

Most trailers are a neutral color, such as black or gray. Paint yours a bright neon color to make it really stand out. If you want a more subtle approach, try marking it in some way so that you can more easily identify it to police. This can include a small strip of paint in a unique place or a sticker.

Use Proper Trailer Storage Techniques

It's best to keep your trailer in a locked location, such as inside a shed or garage. If this is not an option, try to store it somewhere out of sight. For example, place it in your backyard behind a fence where it's not visible from the street. If you have the budget, you could also keep your trailer in a commercial storage facility.

Use Proper Trailer Parking Techniques

When you need to park the trailer somewhere outside your home, be intentional about where you pick. Choose well-lit and high traffic areas, which will deter a potential thief from trying to take your trailer. If possible, reverse your trailer against a wall or fence. This will make disconnecting it difficult, which can also deter a potential thief.

Get Trailer Locks

Locks are a great tool in preventing trailer theft. There are a few key options you will want to consider.

First, a hitch lock. It's a durable two-part box. One part goes above the trailer coupler and the other goes underneath. They connect to make a locked box, which needs to be removed in order to connect the trailer to a different tow vehicle. This helps make the trailer difficult to steal.

Next, a wheel boot. It clamps the wheel so that it can't move. It's a great visual deterrent and is difficult to remove. Choose ones that aren’t able to be sawed off or prised open, fully cover the wheel lugs, and have a lock that's difficult to pick.
