Pick the Right Storage Spot

For Indoor Storage

Where you store the trailer matters. Ideally, the trailer would be stored somewhere indoors. Garages, sheds, and other buildings help prevent damage caused by bad weather, debris buildup, and even thieves.

For Outdoor Storage

If indoor storage is not an option, invest in a quality cover. This will help protect against some weathering, fading, and other types of damage. The cover does not need to be custom made for your given trailer, but it does need to fully cover it.

Get the Trailer Off of the Ground

Trailers are heavy, even without any cargo. All of this weight puts pressure on the tires and suspension system. When the trailer is stationary for long stretches of time, this pressure can take its toll and cause damage.

The solution? Jack up the trailer while it sits in storage.

Get concrete blocks or wood beams, then place them on the ground. Stack them high enough so that the trailer can rest onto them without the tires touching the ground.

Prevent Tire Damage

Tires sitting in storage can end up drying out and cracking. There are two easy ways to help prevent this. First, fully inflate the tires before you store the trailer. Second, spray the rubber with a protective coating. Pay extra attention around the air valve. Remember to do this for any spare trailer tires as well.

Bad weather and precipitation can also harm the tires. If your trailer is stored outside, you may want to remove the tires and store them somewhere indoors.

Grease the Trailer Parts

During trailer storage, the axle bearings are not getting self-lubrication benefits. Try to re-lubricate the bearings every few weeks. It's also wise to grease the moving parts before putting the trailer into storage. Be sure to focus on the hinges, suspension, and hitch.

Prevent Battery Damage

The battery brakes can develop deposits during trailer storage. These can cause shorts and other issues. Take the battery off of the trailer and store it somewhere safely indoors. When you are ready to use your trailer again, simply re-attach the battery.
