A Guide to Loading Cargo Trailers
If you’ve recently purchased a cargo trailer, you’ll want to check out our important loading tips below. If you’re still in the market for a trailer, we encourage you to visit our dealership in Heber City, Utah to start browsing our extensive inventory!
Weight Distribution
Correctly distributing your cargo weight is an essential part of loading a cargo trailer. Pack your trailer too heavy on one side and your items could not only get damaged but your trailer may begin to sway dangerously as you drive. To avoid this, pay close attention to how your items are placed from left to right. If you have an extremely heavy item on the right side of your trailer, you’ll need to place more cargo on the left side to keep it balanced.
60/40
While you’ll want to keep weight distribution even from left to right, the front and back of your trailer are a different story. You want to keep the center of your trailer’s gravity near the hitch to decrease the potential for sway. As a result, around 60 percent of your cargo’s weight should be placed at the top of the trailer (near the hitch). The other 40 percent should be placed in the back.
Stacking
If you find yourself moving a ton of cargo, the stacking method will prove to be extremely helpful! Simply place the heavier objects in your trailer first, and stack the lighter ones on top to make use of all of your trailer’s available space. While you’ll still need to pay close attention to the weight distribution of your cargo, this is a great way to fit a ton of cargo in one space.
We hope the loading tips above will prove to be helpful, as you get ready to load your cargo trailer for the first time.
