How to Winterize Your Trailer
As winter approaches, it's important to prep your trailer for the ice, snow, and cold temperatures ahead. Check out our helpful winterization guide below to be sure your equipment is ready for the upcoming season. If you’re in need of any replacement parts or repairs, feel free to visit our location in Heber City, Utah.
Cleaning
To start, you’ll want to give your trailer a thorough cleaning! This means sweeping the bed and using the hose to rinse away any caked-on mud and debris. Once your trailer has been rinsed, we advise taking a scrub brush and mild cleanser to wash your trailer. (Dish soap will also work fine, but you’ll want to stay away from stronger products like bleach.) If you notice any signs of rust, you’ll want to apply a rust remover spray after you’ve finished washing your trailer.
Maintenance
Now that your trailer is looking spic and span, you’ll want to take some time to lube up some of its more sensitive parts. This includes the hitch and any other mechanical parts that may move or lift your trailer (for example, the lift mechanism on a dump trailer). Once these parts have been taken care of, you’ll want to give your tires a quick inspection. Be sure there are no foreign objects stuck in the rubber and that there are no sounds of leaking air. Afterward, check your tire's air pressure and be sure it is filled to the correct measurement. Underfilled tires tend to turn into flats once temperatures begin to drop.
Storage
If you’re using your trailer throughout the winter season, you may not be able to store it. If this is the case, we strongly encourage you to buy a heavy-duty tarp to protect your trailer from the wind, snow, and ice. If you are able to store your trailer, we advise doing so in a garage or shed where it’s protected from outside elements.
